Carly

I love food. I love looking at it, smelling it, thinking about it, cooking it, and of course, eating it! But I can’t say my diet as always been as good as it is now! Nutritional Therapy was a complete career change for me having come from a world of teaching, corporate training and then civil service marketing. I never really knew how powerful a good diet could be until I changed my own.

I spent much of my teens and twenties suffering from chronic digestive health issues, which conventional medicine was never able to really help with. I had so many tests and the answer was always the same, ‘we’re not sure, there’s nothing seriously wrong, so it must be IBS’. It probably was, but I always felt so frustrated that we could never get to the root cause of the issue, and treatments offered never really worked in the long term. I never seemed to be able to properly heal, and my symptoms began to rule my life.

So I started doing my own digging, and discovered that food was about much more than just taste and enjoyment and could actually have a really significant impact on physical and mental health. Still I was sceptical, but decided it was worth a shot and started doing a little bit of experimenting with my diet. It was like opening the curtains to a beautiful sunny morning, my symptoms started to ease, my energy levels improved, my head felt clearer and I realised I was onto something!

From there on I knew I needed to learn about this properly. After all, a little bit of knowledge can often be a dangerous thing, and with so much in the media and online about nutrition, I wanted to cut through all that confusion and learn the science, the facts. So I embarked on 4 years of study at the prestigious Institute of Optimum Nutrition (ION) recognised for the academic integrity and rigour of its diploma course, and after a long slog I finally graduated with Distinction.

During my training I studied and applied the principles of Functional Medicine, a science-based, holistic, patient-centred approach to optimising health. This involved looking at the role of nutrition in digestive and liver function, endocrine (hormone) support including managing stress, nervous system support, cardiovascular health, immune function, energy production, skin and musculoskeletal health, sports nutrition, female health and fertility and how to achieve and sustain a healthy weight. I’m also trained in appropriate use of functional testing to look at how well the body is working and the role supplements can play in restoring nutritional balance in the body.

Since qualifying my life has changed in so many ways, but probably the biggest has been becoming a mum! Juggling parenthood with work and other commitments has meant even I have found it hard to achieve a healthy diet all of the time! This is why I advocate ‘realism’! Good nutrition should be a positive experience, not something to add to your stress and Nutritional

Therapy is not just about the latest science, it’s also about creating a tailored plan that suits you and your lifestyle, and that’s why it works!
