Greenwich Wellness rooms – Counselling & Psychotherapy

The model of therapy I use
I use an Integrative counselling approach. This model helps clients face each moment openly and authentically without having formed an opinion, expectation or attitude beforehand. Together we will focus on the fears and concerns that limit their psychological freedom, including specific triggers that may be causing a disruptive pattern.
Integrative therapy promotes a healthy balance between mind and body, allowing clients to start setting goals and practising new behaviours. This assists them to expand their limitations and achieve greater gratification.

My experience in counselling
I have worked in the community regarding mental health for over 25yrs. This originally began with working in community theatre to work with those in old people homes, hospitals, women’s refugees and community centres. My passion for this lead to me expand to volunteer as a support worker in probation services in the women’s therapy group, in the befriending programme supporting families in crisis and at The Rise Lewisham mental health drop-in centre facilitating groups and supported drama and art therapy.
Since then I have worked at Greenwich Mindline as a Counsellor and Crisis Worker, supporting clients through their difficulties and ensuring they are referred to the relevant agencies to get the support they require.
As I am a mother of a child with Autistic Spectrum Disorder I have first-hand experience of liaising with the Autistic Society, CAMHS and education authority.

I was drawn to becoming a Counsellor
My first experience of counselling was after a traumatic relationship break up. Life became very difficult and I knew I wasn’t coping well. I felt lonely, confused and unsupported. I realised I needed help when the only thing that numbed the pain for me was alcohol and recreational drugs.
Counselling started the process of recovery and an exploration of myself. It gave me a safe place to consider how I was feeling and really helped me understand what had happened to me. It enabled me to make choices about my life, which was an exciting and liberating experience. It also changed my career path. I had been involved in the creative industries for many years and it seemed a natural transition, to work creatively within a therapeutic setting. After several years of working as a volunteer, I understood this was where my passion and conviction belonged. I had witnessed personally the impact of a supportive environment on mental health and I decided to train as a Counsellor.
This has given me the experience and knowledge to develop my own personal approach to counselling. I continue to be an advocate for mental health and well being, and believe counselling is a powerful tool in this process. It was absolutely an integral factor in my recovery.
