Family Counselling

We all start life with a family, whether that family is blood relatives, foster family or adopted parents. Our families impact almost every aspect of our lives, from our first moments to our last.

If as a family you’re having problems, whatever the cause, Family Counselling can help the whole family to communicate better, and to comprehend and resolve differences. When families go through change, it can be hard to learn to adapt. It’s normal to have issues with your family life from time to time. But, it can be comforting to know that, whatever problems your family is facing; there is help and support available. Counselling can assist family members to support each other through these difficult times, to reduce conflict and arguments and grow stronger as a result.

Families can be a source of support, love and encouragement but often relationships within families are put under pressure and members feel isolated or overlooked.

You’re perhaps a parent worried about your child’s behaviour or how a divorce may impact your family. You might be part of a step family that needs help adjusting, or you may be arguing with parents or siblings and need support communicating with each other.

All families are different, but many face similar issues. Problems that many families face include:

• Problem behaviour with adolescents or older children
• Issues with step family life or when a new partner moves in
• Disruption as a result of divorce or separation
• Money problems, such as redundancy or dept
• Changes in the family structure, possibly caused by bereavement or illness
• Children leaving home
• Unplanned pregnancy

It’s important to remember that there may be a number of issues that are causing family problems, and it may not be possible to ‘fix’ all of the issues. What counselling can do, however, is adjust our attitude to what is happening and try to find solutions to make problems easier to deal with.

Therapy helps those in a close relationship help each other. It allows family members, couples and others who care about each other to express and explore thoughts and emotions safely, to understand each other’s experiences and views, build on strengths, appreciate each other’s needs and make useful changes in their relationships and their lives. Individuals also can find Family Therapy useful, as an opportunity to reflect and strengthen important relationships.

When you meet with a counsellor, they will provide confidential and non-judgemental support, and will encourage everyone who comes to have their say and to share their feelings, if they wish.At the first appointment, the counsellor will ask those involved to talk through what’s happening, and what they would like to change. You will then work with the counsellor to decide how to move forward. This will normally be done in a family group setting, but if appropriate, can lead to one-to-one therapy.

You can expect Family Counselling to help you to learn to work together as a team and build stronger relationships between every member of the family.

Whatever difficulties you’re having as a family, therapy can help.
